Charity launches fund to improve health and wellbeing of local residents

A London-based charity has issued a final call for a £65,000 fund to help people improve their health and wellbeing.

The scheme, which closes this Friday (1 March), is open to local groups and clubs to help get people active in the London boroughs of Merton and Wandsworth.

Get Set, Get Active Fund is spearheaded by the Wimbledon Foundation, the charity of the All England Lawn Tennis Club and The Wimbledon Championships.

The charity is offering grants between £500 – £2,500, and is particularly encouraging applications from anyone who works closely with socially excluded members of the community.

The Wimbledon Foundation was founded in 2013 with the specific aim of helping change people’s lives and make a positive difference. It launched its Get Set, Get Active Fund in 2016.

Helen Parker, Head of the Wimbledon Foundation, said:

Through our Get Set, Get Active Fund we want to support the fantastic work being done by local groups and clubs to help improve people’s lives in our local community.

The charity hopes to build on the success of last year’s scheme, which awarded 29 grants in total, benefiting hundreds of people in the community. The grants were handed out to a range of good causes, including a cycling project for visually-impaired people and chair-based exercise classes for the elderly.

Helen Parker, Head of the Wimbledon Foundation, added:

Sport not only improves people’s physical wellbeing, it can help improve people’s mental wellbeing through learning a new skill or making new friends.

Full details of how to apply can be found at www.wimbledon.com/foundation/getactive. The closing date is Friday 1 March 2019 at 12pm.

Grants can be used towards the costs of direct sports or physical activity provision including equipment and kits, coaching fees and venue hire.
