A worldwide campaign has called on social media users to use the platforms for good.
The #ReclaimSocial drive, a yearly campaign aiming to reclaim social media for good, takes place on 5th February, 2021.
Now in its fourth year, the campaign encourages charities and individuals to #ReclaimSocial by sharing inspiring and positive stories of how they use social media to make a real difference in the world, nominate heroes who brighten up their feed, thank supporters, volunteers and teams, and share the impact of work from the last year.
Previous years have seen famous faces as well as charities big and small take part – and in 2020, organisers Lightful claim the campaign generated more than 152 million timeline impressions of positive content.
#ReclaimSocial comes after charities and social enterprises, including The Rooftop and our partners Campaign Collective, signed up to a commitment to campaign to end hate crime online.
Research published last year revealed that four-fifths of charity beneficiaries had witnessed online hate.
Sarah Clarke from Charities Against Hate said:
For so many people, our online presence is our main connection with the outside world at the moment – from finding out what’s going on to maintaining connections with colleagues, friends and loved ones. We should all be working to make it a supportive space and a place for making a positive impact.
It’s time to say enough is enough and that this is no longer acceptable. #ReclaimSocial is a wonderful way to celebrate the voices that use social media to promote positivity, make a difference and make the world a better place.
