A Sunderland woman has been chosen to represent the North East region in the Queen’s Baton Relay ahead of the Commonwealth Games this summer.

Nicola Wood set up the Wonderful Wig Company as a second business after being diagnosed with cancer back in 2016. Although she’d already experienced hair loss due to the side effects of her arthritis medication, Nicola was dismayed at the scarcity of services for fellow women undergoing cancer treatment.

To support people experiencing hair loss for any reason, Nicola founded the Wonderful Wig Company. A hairdresser with 25 years experience, she expanded the floor space of her Sunderland salon Kitui to create a purpose-built support studio for clients experiencing hair loss. She has since supported 10,000 people and now employs a team of 11. The company has secured contracts with the NHS to support people all over the UK.

The team now has its own range of wigs specific to the needs of its clients, and production will soon be moving to Newcastle. Nicola has also expanded the company’s remit, providing wigs and positive body image support for the LGBTQIA+ community, in addition to other wellness events and workshops that are held both online and in-person.

Nicola is one of nine individuals selected by a panel to carry the baton in the final stages of the relay. She will carry the baton right at the very end of its 90,000 mile trip on 14 July.

Following my own diagnosis, I know the positive difference and confidence our services give back to women, and hope that as a baton bearer I’ll be able to inspire other business owners to take action and create a positive impact
for their community.

“My journey with the baton is symbolic of women’s medical hair loss journeys and a reminder that no one needs to do it alone.”
