University Hospitals Birmingham Charity is helping the Skull Base Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham by providing surgical kits for patients who have had to have an eye removed, in many cases because of cancer.

Having an eye removed is very much the last option for these patients and the operation is carried out in order to prolong their lives. If an eye removal is the only option it can be a really scary process and leave the patient emotionally distressed as they go through their treatment journey.

The charity wanted to help make that transition for patients a little bit easier by providing all the essentials they will need once they leave the hospital. The Eye Care packs contain items from creams and gauzes to cotton pads and eye patches.

Skull Base surgeon, Dr Shaz Ahmed said:

“It will make a huge difference to our patients who have to have an eye removed. We have already received fantastic feedback. A huge thanks to UHB charities for funding this.” 

Dr Kiranjeet Kaur came up with the initiative and said:

“This project will make a massive impact to these patients. I feel very privileged and honoured to be a part of this initiative and very grateful to our UHB charity team for the support.”
