Local taxi firm helps local food hub support more than 100 families a week

A Nottingham food hub has announced it was able to deliver food bundles to more than 100 families each week over the festive period, thanks to a helping hand from local taxi firm DG Cars.

Founded in December 2022 by mum of three, Emma Haywood, Edwalton Food Hub was created to help those most in need of access to nutritional food. As household bills continue to increase, Emma has seen more and more families reach out for help and support.

In June 2023, operations came to an abrupt halt when Emma’s car broke down – stopping her from collecting end of sale produce for six weeks from the local shops and supermarkets she normally visited to build the food parcels. After seeing the amazing work Emma was doing via Facebook, local taxi firm DG Cars reached out to provide an alternative form of transport. Since then, DG Cars has been given Edwalton Food Hub free food collection taxi rides.

Commenting on the support, DG Cars Dominic Moyes, Sales Director at DG Cars, said:

“This year, the cost-of-living crisis has affected everyone, but projects like the Edwalton Food Hub really demonstrate the amount of people who are in need of a helping hand during this difficult period. Adding to this, Christmas can be an incredibly stressful time for so many families, but Emma is a shining example of the brilliant work individuals, and communities, are willing to do to support their neighbours.

“The past six months have seen the beginning of a great partnership between ourselves and Edwalton Food Hub, and we look forward to continuing to work closely with Emma to help many more families into the new year, and beyond.”

Emma also commented: “The help DG Cars has provided is unbelievable. I feel very privileged that it’s continued to support the hub for six months, even after my car was fixed, and I look forward to seeing what the future of this project will look like.

“I do most of the work by myself, unfunded, so with the assistance DG Cars provides, I can deliver more food to more families while no longer having to travel around 1,000 miles a month. This partnership has also allowed me to access a greater variety of food – working closely with Tesco, Iceland and Co-op to collect the surplus food that would otherwise be thrown away at the end of the day.

“I want to say a huge thank you to DG Cars and all the drivers who have enabled Edwalton Food Hub to continue supporting the community, something which is incredibly important to both of us.”
