Celebrate the Unsung LGBT+ Heroes of Medical History

The Proud Trust is excited to announce the launch of its free LGBT+ History Month resource pack for 2024. This is an extremely popular annual publication, with last year’s pack being downloaded over 10,000 times and used to deliver lessons in schools across the country.

This year is particularly special for The Proud Trust because the 2024 LGBT+ History Month logo was designed by Alex, a young person who attends one of its local youth groups. Alex’s winning design beat entries from all over the UK and will be used as the official badge of LGBT+ History Month.

LGBT+ History Month is an annual celebration of the lives of LGBT+ people of the past. It was founded by SchoolsOUT and is marked every February in the UK, with each year’s celebration having its own unique theme. Past years have explored everything from film and television to social justice. 2024’s theme is medicine, which provides a unique opportunity to explore the contribution of LGBT+ people to advances in medical science, as well as reflecting on the community’s relationship with the world of medicine through topics such as the history of the AIDS crisis, the medical treatment of trans people and LGBT+ people’s contributions to the NHS.

Theo, a young person who has been supported by The Proud Trust’s mentoring programme said:

“If [LGBT+ history] was taught in schools it would show that LGBT+ people are just a part of everyday life and have been present throughout history but just haven’t been able to show it… It gives you someone to look up to or admire, and gives other people the chance to see that queer people can be successful.”
