Established in Brighton in 2018 to work with musicians in recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction, Not Saints has always had a challenging existence. In the world of music, where alcohol and substance misuse are interwoven into the very fabric of day-to-day life the challenges faced by Not Saints and the artists they work with have been many.
Founder and Director Chris De Banks said:
“People always think it’s a great idea, but alcohol and drugs are so normalised we have to work hard to have an impact. We’re not trying to change the world at all, we’re just trying to show that things can be done differently. The welfare, recovery and creativity of musicians we work with has to come first.”
Now in its sixth year, Not Saints is facing its biggest challenge to date. Currently experiencing a significant financial gap due to a three-year investment falling through, the label which has supported hundreds of musicians and thousands in the wider recovery community, is facing an uncertain future and could fold altogether.
Refusing to admit defeat, the team at Not Saints has set up a fundraising campaign with GoFundMe to try and raise enough to continue their work on existing projects. If they can beat their goals, they plan to reach new people in recovery around the UK.
Chris De Banks added:
“We’re just trying to reach anyone whose life has been touched by addiction or alcoholism. Anyone who may not have heard of us that will like and understand what we do. By offering creativity and artistic expression we are helping people to stay sober and contribute in a positive way to society. If you can donate, it will go a long way to helping so many people.”
With continuing cuts to alcohol and drug treatment services, independent organisations like Not Saints’ value to society is immeasurable in helping people to connect, create and commit to their long-term sobriety. With plans to work with dozens of new musicians all over the UK, and a goal to set up a residential studio and workshop retreat for recovering musicians and their families, Not Saints’ goals are mighty. With a little help right now, they might just get there.
