What is a Community Interest Company?

The Rooftop News is a Community Interest Company (or CIC). It is registered in Scotland number SC675442 at The Melting Pot, 5 Rose Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2PR.

A CIC is a special type of limited company in the United Kingdom which exists to benefit the community rather than private shareholders. Our application was approved by the community interest company regulator on 24 September 2020.

The advertising carried on the site helps support our social impact.

We have to live up to and report on our impact based on our community interest statement:

The company’s activities will provide benefit to enable people with lived experience of overcoming challenges to have their voices heard while simultaneously meeting the wider public’s growing need for more positive news.

We have an asset lock, a legal promise stating that the company’s assets will only be used for its social objectives. This means that should the company be wound up, the assets will be transferred to Firstport, charity registration number: SC037942.

If the company makes any surplus it will be used to:

Provide free communications skills training to those with lived experience of overcoming challenges (such as poverty, disability, social isolation or prejudice).

Our constitution is available to view online at the Companies House website.
