The view of 2019 from The Rooftop

Thanks to you, The Rooftop has gone from strength to strength in 2019 with up to 500,000 content views of news worth shouting about a week.

The Facebook community has grown to almost 15,000 people and, according to independent research, in some areas of the UK more people get their news from us than from Snapchat or commercial radio stations!

But which were the most viewed stories of 2019?

Our reports from the Social Enterprise World Forum proved to be among the most popular, such as the women tackling poverty and plans for an engineering institute for blind students the most read stories.

Away from Addis Ababa, the top five stories were:

News that a UK supermarket has awarded grants to rid the world of plastic pollution.

The work of Kidscape which protects children from bullying.

The American who ignored criticism from mainstream media to fulfil her dream of learning Welsh.

The pasty makers who are reducing re-offending through a social enterprise.

And the nominees for Charity Film of the Year 2019 just squeezed into the top five.

Meanwhile we also introduced a new partnership with Project Syndicate in 2019. This has given Rooftop readers access to comment pieces from leading figures, such as the recent column by Time “Person of the Year” Greta Thunberg.

However, the most popular opinion piece of the year was a Rooftop exclusive on how there is a beacon of hope to tackle pollution of the world’s oceans.

Thank you for being part of The Rooftop in 2019 and we look forward to continuing to provide a daily dose of positive news in 2020.
